1. Cute Cupcake Cake Balls
A few years ago, I struck up a friendly online volley with famed cake blogger Bakerella. It started when she commissioned me to do some art for her, and then she was inspired to make a cute little video for me, and then I did more art for her, and then she sent me little cake truffles that looked like my Cuppie Character. We really upped the “no, I love you more” war here! Of all of the things I have seen in my life, these red velvet filled morsels are one of the cutest. Who could resist little cartoon cupcake bites? Recipe here.
2. Rainbow Candy Cake
Go ahead, ask anyone in the world who knows me or knows of me what the first word is that they think of when they think of me. There’s an above 90% chance it will be either “sweet” or “unicorn”. These associations please me greatly. So it should come as no surprise that this cake by confirmed cake genius and fellow pug lover Sprinkle Bakes, which is beyond 100% sweet and would absolutely serve as unicorn food, ranks high on my list of over the top cute cakes. Featuring rainbow layers, sweet buttercream frosting, and thousands of units of candy and sprinkles, this cake is a true masterpiece of magic. Recipe here.
3. Mini Animal Cakes
I’ll just warn you now: I’ve seen a thing or two that was alarmingly cute in my day, but these baby cakes take the…well, you know. When I first came across the collection of animal cakes by Philadelphia bakery Whipped Bakeshop, it inspired an epic session of cooing and gasping “omigod so cute”. I think that part of what makes them so cute is that they’re not overdone, but in their simplicity the designer, Zoe, captures the sweet innocence of childhood. Check out the entire collection, and you’re bound to find them coo-worthy, too. Collection here.
4. Unicorn Cupcakes
WWUE? To the uninitiated, that stands for “what would unicorns eat?”. And the answer is these cupcakes, created by Bakers Royale. Decorated with fluffy buttercream frosting, they’re then festooned with all manner of magical and unicorn-approved toppings, including gilded berries, colorful sixlets candies, and thoroughly magical and mystical marshmallows. I’m sure that they taste like cotton candy clouds. Recipe here
5. Topiary Cupcakes
As a child, I was obsessed with all things tiny. Even today, dollhouse-scaled objects never fail to capture my fancy. So naturally, when I came across cupcakes by Erin Bakes featuring candy-coated peeps made to resemble tiny topiary, I was absolutely delighted. Although these treats were designed for Easter, I find that they provide year-round cuteness. Recipe here.
6. Circus Animal Cookie Cake
Is there a single happier commercial snack than circus animal cookies? To the uninitiated, these sweet treats are similar to animal crackers, but coated in a white chocolate candy coating and dotted all over with sprinkles. Julianne of Beyond Frosting has taken the heart and soul of these cookies and translated it into cake form, with absolutely adorable and delicious results. This is what circus animal cookies want to be when they grow up! Recipe here.
7. Cute Pug Cake Pops
If you read my website, it’s not hard to figure out that I am a lover of sweets and all things adorable, and that I’m an immense admirer of Bakerella. But you might not know right away that I am a proud pug parent. My two pugs, Olive and Porkchop, are basically the loves of my life. These cake pops bring together many of my deepest loves in one easy-to-eat form, and just so happen to be jaw-droppingly cute. They are my everything! Recipe here.
8. Pineapple Cake
Forget SpongeBob Squarepants’ pineapple under the sea; I want to live in a pineapple that looks like THIS. While my friend Lyndsay at Coco Cake Land made this as a birthday cake for a lucky little girl who was turning four, I thoroughly enjoy this cake as a full-fledged adult. There’s something that is just so happy about this simple, bright, sunny pineapple cake. It makes me want to smile, and it makes me hungry for cake. It’s a winner! Recipe here.
9. Cuppie Cupcakes
A few years ago, when my book came out, New York Cupcakes (don’t be confused, but they’re based in the Seattle area, where I used to live) made fondant-topped cupcakes which they decorated to look like my Cuppie character. Not only did they totally nail the expressions of my cartoon character, but they tasted amazing. Full roundup here.
10. Hot dog cookies
I have a confession: I love-love-love trompe l’oeil sweets. I find something adorable about savory-looking foods which are actually sweet. And one of my favorite creations was definitely these hot dog cookies. They might look like barbecue fare, but they are actually baked goods! These simple cookies just involve a little food coloring and clever molding of dough, and are guaranteed to delight. Recipe here.
