Patchwork is the glory of a quilter. It’s beautiful, classic, and best of all – totally sustainable! Use this quilt block pattern composed of template #1 and template #2 to bash your scrap stash and make a gorgeous quilt.
Disclaimer: Minimal quilter’s math is required. But a trip to the fabric store is not!
You know all those bits of beautiful fabric you could not bear to throw out as you were quilting all year? Well they don’t have to take up space in your closet anymore.

Designing your patchwork block:
Begin by printing out your first template, or drawing your own block layout. Slip it into a plastic page protector (the cheaper, the better).
Using a dry erase marker, draw the primary seam lines to separate the main patches. With another color, draw the secondary seam lines.
Count the number of pieces you will need to complete your block. Divide your desired finished block size by the number of pieces you counted.
For example, for a 4″ x 4″ block with 16 pieces, each piece will be 1″. Linda wanted her block to finish at 8″ x 8″, so each finished piece will be 2″.

In order to cut your pieces, remember to add 1/4″ to each side of each piece for seam allowance. The cut size will then be 1/2″ larger in height and width.
Bashing your stash:
As you sort through your scrap stash, you may want to make piles of shades so you can easily find the colors you’ll use for each block. Consider an overall color scheme, as well as contrast among the pieces.
Linda loves to use lots of batiks so her scraps coordinate fairly naturally. But if you have many different patterns and solid fabrics, organize them accordingly so you can pick out pieces that work well together.
If you need an excuse to go to the fabric store, of course this quilt pattern also finishes quite beautifully with matching textiles throughout.
