Freeform crochet is all about the various elements, or motifs, you can incorporate into the piece. Some popular motifs used in freeform compositions are hearts, spirals, and something called a scrumble.
Of course, the crochet flower is a classic motif, popular since its explosion in the 1970s and still as fashionable as ever. There are countless variations of this pattern, but here we are covering the basic 5-petal one.
If you’re a beginner at crochet, this free crochet flower pattern is perfect for you because you’ll practice 3 very commonly used stitches: the chain, the double crochet, and the slip stitch.
Free crochet flower pattern:
Sl knot, ch 4, sl st, *ch 3, 2 dc, sl st, repeat from * for each petal, tie off.
Not surprisingly, the pattern begins with a chain, so start with a slipknot on your crochet hook. Then, chain 4 and bring the hook to the beginning of the chain with a slip stitch. There you have the center of the flower.
For the first petal, chain 3 and work 2 double crochets into the circle. Then tack it inside the center with a slip stitch.
Repeat this sequence 4 more times for a total of five petals. You can always continue to form petals for more complex flowers.
Finally, gently pull your petals out from the center. Now you have your crochet flower! The tails can be used to tie your motif into another project.
This very simple crochet flower is suitable for keychains, jewelry, and other small gifts. But it’s especially useful as an add-on to all kinds of projects, such as bags, hats, and perhaps a freeform crochet canvas creation.
