Hi, I’m Ruby McGrath and I want to share my current love for all things mermaid with you!
As well as my love affair with cacti and unicorns, I have also rekindled an old flame for magical sea creatures. Maybe it’s because I’m a red head like Ariel?
Anyway, below you will find my pattern for these gorgeous Crochet Mermaid Shell Cushions, that instantly transform absolutely any room into a happy, mermaid-y place. Fact.
Also, I have made a cute little video tutorial for you guys, showing you how to make your very own super cute miniature Mermaid Shell Brooch! Feel free to pause the video when needed if you are a beginner – hopefully all abilities can have a go!
What you will need for the brooch:
– 2 x Stylecraft DK in ‘Clematis 1390’
– 4mm hook
– Toy stuffing
– Tapestry needle
– Brooch back
Materials
• 4 x 100g Stylecraft Chunky in ‘Aspen 1422’ (Turquoise) OR ‘Fondant 1241’ (Pink)
• 8mm hook
• Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends and sewing together)
• Toy stuffing This pattern uses US terminology
Stitch count includes chain throughoutCushion Sides (make 2)
Row 1
Ch25, 1dc into third ch from hook and then into each of the next 6ch. Work 1hdc into each of the next 8ch, then 1sc into each of the rem 8sts. Ch1 and turn. (24sts)
Row 2
1sc into each sc from prev row, 1hdc into each hdc and 1dc into each dc. Ch3 and turn. (24sts)
Rows 3 – 17
Cont working in this way for the next 15 rows, chaining 3 when you finish the row on a dc, and chaining 1 when you end the row on a sc. (24sts)
Row 18
1sc into each sc from prev row, 1hdc into each hdc and 1dc into each dc. Turn, but DO NOT chain. (24sts) Shell Stitches (rep on both sides)
Row 1
Work 5dc into the space along the top of the shell, where rows 18 & 17 meet, then slst to the point where rows 17 & 16 meet. Repeat these sts over the top of rows 16 & 15, 15 & 14, 14 & 13 and so on – until you have shell sts all along the top of the shell.
Base Of Shell (rep on both sides)
*Before working along the bottom of the shell, you need to make your way down there. So, simply slst your way along the edge of the shell to the bottom.
Row 1
Ch2 then work 9hdc2tog along the bottom of the shell. This nips it in nicely to give it a good ‘shell’ shape. (9sts)
Rows 2 and 3
Work 2hdc into the first and last sts, but just 1hdc in each st in between. Ch2 and turn. (sts increase by 2 after each row)
Row 4
Work 2hdc into the first and last sts, but just 1hdc in each st in between. Fasten off. (15sts)
Assembling
Stitching up:
Hold the two completed sides of the cushion together, wrong side facing (you can tell by looking at the shell sts at the top), and use a tapestry needle to stitch them together all around the edge. Leave a gap to insert the stuffing.
Stuffing:
Push stuffing in through the hole you have left open, reaching into the corners but being careful not to over stuff. Stitch up the hole securely and fasten off.
I hope you enjoy! Please share photos of your finished mermaid creations

Why couldn’t you leave one end open and put a small soap in this for a little girl? Or for a drawer sachet? Just thinking out loud….
