Designer Julie King shows beginners how to insert a brim in a hat with the single crochet stitch.
Giving a crochet hat a wire brim can add tremendous stability, functionality, and a professional finish. The greatest part is it’s actually super easy to do!
The best projects in crochet for beginners use the single crochet and double crochet stitches most prominently, if not exclusively. This technique utilizes the single crochet stitch in a way that will take you from beginner to intermediate in a day!
The key to the adding a brim to any hat is to work the final round of your hat over a piece of wire.
Here’s the pattern instructions:
Chain 1, 1 single crochet in each of the stitches, 2 single crochets every 12 or so stitches to increase.
To make a single crochet over wire:
Holding the wire behind your work, insert your hook into the first stitch. Keep the wire on top of your hook, but below your yarn. Yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops.
Be sure to leave a couple of inches of wire sticking out at the ends so that you can secure it at the end of the round. Bend the end of the wire up at the beginning of the row so it doesn’t accidentally slip through the round.
Working 2 sc’s into one stitch creates an increase by adding stitches to the round, resulting in more total stitches, or more “fabric” in the current round than the one prior.
The increase is so that the brim is a little wider than the last round. This will prevent your brim from going wavy or floppy.
After you work single crochets all around, it’s time to cut the wire and lock the ends together. First lay the brim flat. Then leave about an inch or two of wire overlapping to wrap them around eachother.
Now continue single crocheting over the wire closure. Finally, end with an invisible join for the most seamless finish. It disguises itself as a stitch!
This simple technique can be used to add shape and definition to any garment or accessory you crochet.
